Combining innovative LED illumination and nature-inspired artistry,
Sacramento's U.S. Bank Tower features a dynamic new large-scale architectural
lighting facade. The massive light sculpture crowning the building
located at 621 Capitol Mall in Sacramento, California is the latest
achievement and creative vision of renowned artist Michael Hayden.
The technology for this project was engineered by KiboWorks.
KiboWorks and Hayden's collaboration consists of two parts, in the
seven-story lobby, an LED lighting display visually replicates the
sinuous curves and rushing water of the nearby American and Sacramento
rivers that wind through and around the city, called "The RAPIDS".
The other display, titled "LUMETRIC RIVER" covers the building's Southfacing
louvered top with a LED video projection of rushing river water that
will be visible at night from miles away.
The exterior lighting elements feature KiboWorks range of high-power
linear fixtures. On the interior, Hayden used 200 of KiboWorks 20-inch-square
tiles, coupled with our proprietary stream control system. Holographic
panel coupled with 25 individually addressable RGB LEDs on each tile
result in a flawlessly commissioned light sculpture that embodies
the mercurial essence of the river. On the roof are 30 G1 RGB Linear
fixtures which illuminate a decorative louvred array on the crest
of the building. The array is 150´ long and 5 stories high.
Controlled by DMX, the effect gives the impression of running water
and can be seen from the nearby Interstate-5 or Highway 50.
The atrium of the building houses the second part of the artwork.
This continues the theme of running water, and is comprised of 200
RGB fixtures. Each fixture is 2´ x 2´, and houses a PCB
with a 5 x 5 array of RGB LEDs. Each LED is individually addressable
and are mounted in a large array, along with many similarly sized
holographic mirrors, which forms a sculpture suspended above the lobby
floor. The sculpture extends over 5 floors and spans 84 feet.
