The Atlanta Botanic Gardens occupy 30 acres of breath-taking exhibit's,
located adjacent to Piedmont Park in Midtown Atlanta, Georgia. The
gardens have been growing for more than 35 years, during which time,
there's been numerous additions and updated exhibit's, making the
gardens a must see attraction
Debuted in 2011, the Christmas lightshow extravaganza, 'Garden Lights,
Holiday Nights' has returned each year, with the centre piece performance
once again being the great lawn orchestral orbs. KiboWorks formally
Lighting Science/LED Effects in collaboration with CD+M lighting and
Tres Fromme landscape designer, created the 150 custom topiary shapes
ranging from small 24" diameter domes to 72" domes and 12' tall tree
form to complete the Lawn landscape. Central to the effects was the
single RGB DMX engine that Lighting Science developed to drive the
lighting effects an all the topiary forms. The 24v DC engines comprise
a PCB with 50 RGB leds arranged in a star pattern giving the maximum
illumination for all forms, the engines where RDM and DMX compliant
allowing each of the fixtures to be quickly patched during the installation
and programming. The engines where then fitted in to a common base
sections that fitted all forms and was also designed to be IP67 to
ensure no moisture penetrated the forms.
Each year as set of new Christmas themed songs are developed for the
30 minute rolling show and must be meticulously choreographed with
the great lawn orbs to create and Christmas lighting show now viewed
by more than 200,000 paying guests each year.
The challenge for each year's show is to be even more creative in
every aspect. Executive director for the gardens, Mary Pat Matheson,
outlined the expectations: "The lighting display on the Great Lawn,
as the focal exhibit, has to be very impactful with lights, sounds
and color movements all choreographed to precise timing". Once again,
the show exceeded all expectations, and led to the 2013 Architectural
SSL Product Innovation Award for the most creative use of color.
